Greenwell Foundation
The beginning... In 1966, John Philip Greenwell, Jr. established the Greenwell Foundation, and began long-term plans for his Southern Maryland estate. Mr. Greenwell was a true visionary. Long before the Americans with Disabilities Act, he envisioned a place where people with disabilities could come and experience the beauty of nature and the joy of outdoor recreation, just like anyone else. To that end, he donated his property to the state of Maryland.
Today… The Greenwell Foundation offers therapeutic and recreational horseback riding lessons, summer camps, nature programs, kayaking, and accessible site rentals and is regularly developing new programs to meet community needs. Greenwell is also the host site for Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets, a program offering weekend stays at the Greenwell’s Knott Lodge to disabled veterans from area military hospitals and their families. Funding for all of Greenwell’s programs comes from a number of sources including the St. Mary's County Commissioners, the United Way, grants, private philanthropy organizations, supporters, and members. A significant portion of our operating budget is generated by program and rental fees. Every effort is made to keep fees as low as possible so that everyone may participate without creating a financial burden.
The future… In addition to Camp Greenwell — a traditional day camp — Greenwell offers specialty camps including Fishing Camp, Horse Camp and Kayaking Camp. These camps are very popular and fill up very early. Greenwell hopes to offer more sessions of these camps in 2011. Nature Time is Greenwell’s outdoor nature program for the younger crowd and recently expanded to include every Head Start participant in St. Mary’s County. Nature Time will expand even further to include daycare providers and centers from the region.
