Q

What does it cost to enter the tournament?

A

The entry fee for the tournament is $400. This includes the vessel entry fee with up to four anglers. Each additional angler is $100. There is an early bird discount on the initial entry fee if entered before September 1st. This fee is only $350 for the vessel and first four anglers.

How many people can fish on the same vessel?

A

The number of anglers is limited to the maximum allowed persons allowed on your vessel. All anglers on the vessel must be paid in full to participate.

Who can enter the tournament?

A

Anyone legally in the country can participate in the tournament. It is an “open” tournament. Professionals and novice anglers both may fish. Persons under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

What is a TWT?

A

TWT stands for tournament within a tournament. TWT payouts are based on the number of entrants in each specific TWT. See the rules and regulations for specific details about each TWT.

Do I have to weigh-in at a specific station?

A

Yes. The weigh station you chose upon registration is the station you MUST weigh in at or your catch will not qualify.

Do I get to keep the fish I weigh in?

A

No. All fish weighed in will not be returned. We keep the weighed-in fish in case there is a dispute or discrepancy in regards to the validity of the fish weighed in. We have the right to have the fish dissected and tested by a marine biologist to verify the validity of the catch. All fish weighed in may be used for the “professionals only” filleting competition to be held at each station after 4:00PM. Filleted fish may be used at the Monster Rockfish Festival on Sunday, October 31st.

Do I have to weigh in my fish?

A

No. You have the right to choose if and which fish you will weigh in. If you do not believe you have a fish heavy enough to contend, there is no need to weigh it in or even check your vessel in at the weigh station.

Where will winners be announced?

A

Winners will be announced at the Monster Rockfish festival on Sunday at Greenwell State Park.

Are there any other prizes besides 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and the State record?

A

Yes. There will be door prizes, sponsor prizes and participant raffles. There are many great reasons to attend the festival. Every tournament angler has a chance to win a prize.

When is weigh in?

A

Weigh in starts at 11:00AM on the day of the tournament and continues until 4:00PM. All boats weighing fish in must check in with Dock master by 3:30PM. See the official rules and regulations for full detail.

A

There are seven weigh in stations.(see list)

Where can I fish?

A

You are allowed to fish in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. All Maryland rules, laws and regulations must be followed.

Is there a rain date?

A

No. The tournament will go on rain or shine. Anglers are expected to use their best judgment in regards to the weather and their vessels capabilities. There will be no cancelations or refunds unless boating is strictly prohibited by law.

Where is the award ceremony?

A

All awards will be announced and awarded at the Monster Rockfish Festival at Greenwell State Park on Sunday October 30th, 2011.

What is the Monster Rockfish Festival?

A

The Monster Rockfish festival is a fully non-profit event to support the Greenwell Foundation. It is a free event held on the last Sunday of October. See the Greenwell Foundation website for details.

What time can I start fishing?

A

Maryland Rockfish regulations are to be followed in regards to when you may start fishing. Currently the regulations state that lines may not be in the water before 5:00AM.

Do I need to check in before the event?

A

So long as you’ve received your captains package and follow all rules enclosed, there is no need to check in prior to the event.

Is there a captains meeting?

A

Yes. There will be two, one in the southern region and one in the north. Locations, dates and times are to be determined.

How much money can I win?

A

It depends. There is over $130,000 in prizes. So long as a minimum of 100 boats enter, there will be a guaranteed pay out of:

  • Two – First place winners = $10,000 each, one in the North and one in the South.
  • Two – Second place winners = $3,500 each, one in the North and one in the South.
  • Two – Third place winners = $1,500 each, one in the North and one in the South.

One – State record winner = $100,000 if a Maryland state record rockfish is caught on the tournament day by a participating angler.

There are also three TWTs with payouts determined by the number of entrants.

Can I purchase extra shirts and hats?

A

Each registered vessel gets one hat and one shirt for the team captain (the angler who registers). You may purchase extra gear at our website store. See tab above.
